Halloween!

So my visions of Halloween in America have just been well and truly ruined.

For the past 6 weeks (yes, 6 weeks), Lehigh Campus has literally turned into a Halloween dream. Dining halls have been decorated head to toe with creepy little dolls, pumpkins and huge inflatable spiders which MOVE. My excitement for Halloween has obviously building up for quite a while now. I was expecting a weekend full of enthusiastic Americans dressed up in the most elaborate of costumes, scaring the absolute shit out of me. Turns out however, Lehigh students are very similar to Kent ones. Halloween is in actual fact just a chance for girls to dress up like sluts and boys to take advantage of that. Apparently I would look like a fool if I was to dress up as a vampire on Halloween in America- what the fuck? At least I made some sort of effort last year- yes, I looked like a slut but there was some fake blood involved! Personally, I’d rather travel back through time to the Halloween of ’09. 72 Whitstable Road house party, homemade punch and passing out at 1am in just my glow in the dark Halloween underwear. Ahhh memories.

All in all, I don’t know what to anticipate for this weekend- a 3 day bender involving lots of sluts I guess. Boring.

Fashion Affairs

My friends ridicule me to some extent at home for being an avid “trend” follower. What’s that? Crop tops are “in” this season? And bam, two weeks later I have five crop tops in my wardrobe that will most definitely be out of fashion in three months time. Petty, I know, that I rely on the likes of Topshop and H&M to tell me what to wear. But there we go, that’s me!
Moving to America, the land of the sweatpant and tennis shoe (don’t ask, all I know is that you would NEVER catch me in a pair) was quite obviously a huge culture shock. On my first day of classes, I roll up in a dress, full face of make-up and a bright pink handbag. My biker boots were the only thing stopping me from looking like Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. And to my horror, all of my new classmates were decked head to toe in Lehigh tracksuits and tennis shoes. Not even a scrap of make-up in sight. Whatever happened to making an effort? Feeling like a completely over-dressed dickhead, I decided to tone it down in an effort to look less European and fashion conscious even though my heart was completely against the idea.
The lack of originality is something which completely mystifies me. Don’t get me wrong, who doesn’t love chilling out in a pair of sweat pants and a hoody at the end of a shit day? I certainly do. But I also love feeling good about myself by making an effort with what I choose to wear every morning. I do love you Americans, but c’mon... looking like a walking Lehigh advertisement 24/7? Really? I think I’ve decided to stay true to my English ways for now; I haven’t turned into a complete lazy bitch just yet.
Oh, but I will never be sporting my 80’s style animal print harem pants again. I don’t think I can take anymore “ahh... um, nice pants” through gritted teeth any more. Sigh.
